5 Easy Halloween Party Ideas

15 Sep

Halloween is my favorite holiday!  I love everything from the costumes to the candy to the decorations.  If you’re planning a party for kids or adults (or both), we have five easy ideas to help get your party started from food to decorations.

1. Photo Booth

No matter if it’s a kid or adult party, a photo booth is a great way to show off those costumes!  You can create a wall in your home or in your garage for everyone to take their selfies or assign a designated person to take pics of all your spooky guests.

3. Spooky Ice Cubes

One of the easiest and most fun way to add some fun to your Halloween party is to freeze plastic spiders in ice to make your drinks extra spooky! Simply use ice cube trays, add small plastic spiders and fill with water and freeze.  Note:  Be careful with small children as this may pose a choking hazard.

4. Mummy Hot Dogs

Mummy hot dogs are always a huge hit for kids and adults alike.  They’re so cute and easy to eat at a party.   We found this recipe on ThePioneerWoman.com.
Ingredients
  • 8 oz. crescent roll sheet (or crescent roll dough)
  • hot dogs
  • thick slices pepper jack cheese
  • Nonstick spray
  • Yellow or honey mustard, for serving
Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Open and unroll the crescent roll sheet onto a cutting board, with the long side facing you. Cut 1/4- to 1/2-inch wide strips cross-wise (or across the short side—you need 24 strips total).
  2. Cut each slice of cheese into 4 long rectangles. Wrap one piece of cheese underneath one hot dog. Start with one strip of dough and wrap it around the cheese and hot dog like a mummy bandage. Continue with two more strips, pressing the end of the last strip together with the start of a new strip. Place cheese side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and spray with nonstick spray.  Repeat with all of the remaining hot dogs.
  3. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool for 5 minutes before adding two little dots of mustard as eyes. Serve immediately.

5. Party Favors

Three Festive Holiday Cocktail Recipes

16 Nov

Holiday parties always need a signature cocktail! I’ve put together three of my favorite holiday cocktail recipes I’ve used at parties throughout the years.  They’re always a big hit and somewhat easy to make ahead of time so you have time to enjoy your guests.

Cranberry Gimlet

  • 2 ounces gin
  • 1 ounce unsweetened cranberry juice
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • Whole cranberries, for garnish

Directions

Fill a shaker with ice and pour in ingredients.  Shake until ice cold and strain into a cocktail glass or personalized plastic cup. Garnish with frozen whole cranberries.   Recipe (revised): FoodFanatic.com.

Candy Cane Cocktails

  • 1 1/4 ounces vanilla vodka
  • 1 1/4 ounces white crème de cacao
  • 3/4 ounce peppermint schnapps
  • Garnish: peppermint candy

Directions

Mix ingredients in a ice-filled cocktail shaker.  Shake and pour into cocktail glass or personalized plastic cup.  Garnish rim with crushed peppermint candies! Recipe:  Myrecipes.com.

Pomegranate Martinis

  • 1 can frozen limeade concentrate
  • 2 c. water
  • 3½ c. gold tequila
  • 2 c. pomegranate juice
  • 1 c. Triple Sec
  • 5 limes
  • Ice cubes for serving
  • 1 c. fresh pomegranate seeds (from 1 pomegranate)

Directions

  1. In large pitcher, combine limeade and water until well blended. Stir in tequila, pomegranate juice, and triple sec.
  2. Cut each lime crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick wheels; cut a slit in each wheel, from center to edge. To serve, place ice cubes and a few pomegranate seeds in each glass; place a lime wheel on rim.

Q.

What is your favorite thing about working at Good Housekeeping?

A.

We cover everything I love from cleaning hacks and top toys to tested-‘til-perfect recipes and cute shoes. And the covers are just so pretty that I get a matching manicure every month. My nails have issues…of GH!

Q.

We know you are all about a good workout! What is your favorite workout to do and why?

A.

Picking a favorite workout would be like picking a favorite child. I can’t do it! I do something different every day so I never get bored (or injured). My steady rotation is: SLT, Poe yoga, OrangeTheory Fitness and Flywheel.

Q.

What is the ONE thing in your wardrobe you couldn’t live without?

A.

Right now it would be my Karl Lagerfeld critter sneakers. OBSESSED!

Q.

What’s an emerging home trend you’re seeing right now?

A.

We just ran photographer Gray Malin’s guest retreat in the July issue of GH and I fell in love with his layered carpet look. I went home an immediately ordered a grey sisal carpet from Capel Rugs as the base for a fun and graphic Pottery Barn rug.

Q.

Just for fun … who is your celebrity crush?

A.

Kelly Rippa! I love, love, love doing her show. She’s a Jersey girl just like me and is so kind and engaging with her fans.
