{"id":6395,"date":"2017-01-21T21:00:54","date_gmt":"2017-01-22T03:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/?p=6395"},"modified":"2017-01-22T20:55:39","modified_gmt":"2017-01-23T02:55:39","slug":"homemade-chicken-soup-recipe-for-cozy-winter-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thestationerystudio.com\/blog\/homemade-chicken-soup-recipe-for-cozy-winter-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Homemade Chicken Soup Recipe for Cozy Winter Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6472 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-001.jpg\" alt=\"Soup\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-001.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-001-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-001-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-001-1024x512.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On those cold days of winter, if you are working or need to be\u00a0out of the house all day but want some homemade soup when you get home, try this tried and true homemade chicken soup recipe which is made in a slow cooker. \u00a0My slow cooker capacity is 7 quarts so if you have a smaller one\u00a0you will need to adjust the recipe accordingly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_6341.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6410 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_6341-e1485137170293-300x274.jpg\" alt=\"img_6341\" width=\"300\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_6341-e1485137170293-300x274.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_6341-e1485137170293-768x701.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_6341-e1485137170293-1024x935.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ingredients:<\/p>\n<p>Put all the following into the slow cooker:<\/p>\n<p>1 \u00a0\u00a032-oz box chicken broth (I like the Kitchen Basics brand)<\/p>\n<p>8 cups of cold water<\/p>\n<p>3 \u00a0chicken bouillon cubes (I use the Telma brand, found in the Kosher aisle)<\/p>\n<p>1 whole chicken, small or medium sized<\/p>\n<p>2 \u00a0 12oz. bags of small baby carrots \u00a0(or 3-4 cups of carrot slices)<\/p>\n<p>8 large stalks celery, sliced<\/p>\n<p>1 large\u00a0onion, chopped<\/p>\n<p>3\/4 cups barley (not quick barley)<\/p>\n<p>Set the slow cooker for 4-5 hours on high. \u00a0Be sure the temperature of the chicken is at least 165-degrees when you remove it. \u00a0I place it on a jelly roll pan and break it apart to cool. \u00a0When it&#8217;s cool enough to touch, I shred the chicken pieces and return them to the soup. \u00a0Now the important part &#8211; taste the soup! \u00a0You can salt to your taste but I rarely add more salt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6473 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-002.jpg\" alt=\"Soup\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-002.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-002-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-002-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.thestationerystudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2017-soup-002-1024x512.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/a>Once soup cools a bit, I ladle out servings in disposable containers, label them and freeze them. \u00a0I leave enough in a larger container to put in the fridge for the week. \u00a0The frozen servings are wonderful to use in the future on a cold day when you just want one serving of homemade soup.
