Sweetest Day dates back to around 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio when Herbert Birch Kingston, who was a local candy company employee, wanted to bring some joy and happiness to those less fortunate. With the assistance of friends, he began distributing candy and small gifts to children living in orphanages, those who were ill or had disabilities, and to other forgotten individuals.
Around the same time, Ann Pennington, a movie star of the day, enjoyed handing out hundreds of boxes of candies to postal workers to thank them for the work they do on behalf of the community. And then there was Theda Bara, another movie star, who also helped establish Sweetest Day by giving away 10,000 boxes of candy to people in hospitals and to those individuals who came to watch one of her films at the Playhouse Square Theaters in Cleveland, Ohio.
Within a decade, the simple idea of giving gifts to those special to you had gained such popularity that the city of Cleveland officially declared the third Saturday of October as Sweetest Day. The traditional observance of Sweetest Day involves the same types of presents and acknowledgements as Valentine’s Day. It is truly original American holiday.
